Hay River Métis Development Corporation

The Hay River Métis Development Corporation was incorporated on 1 March 1988 pursuant to the Canada Business Corporations Act and is managed by a board of directors. The Corporation operates under a mixture of a business and social mandate with the primary objective of generating profits and the secondary objective of providing employment.

HRMDC has joint ownership of Metro – 51% HRMDC and 49% Rowes Construction Ltd.  which currently provides housing from 2 duplexes. The Corporation has determined that focusing on profits will provide the required financial resources to address the social mandate.

The Corporation has participated in a number of business ventures Since 1 March 1988, and has developed a portfolio that includes real estate, building construction, environmental activities, retail, and general contracting. To accomplish the work involved in these business activities, the Corporation relies heavily on funding from numerous Northwest Territories government departments.
The Corporation has established and continues to maintain a positive working relationship with the Department of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development and the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.

Our Mission

The HRDMC’s mission is to provide a fair return on investments to its shareholders and to assist in the promotion of Métis values and economic independence through participation in appropriate economic endeavors. HRDMC will pursue a diverse portfolio of investments consisting of a sound real estate base, supporting active businesses or Entrepreneur that will maximize Métis participation. And will/may involve joint ownership with other development corporations.

HRDMC will be a leader and major player in the sustainable economic development of the Hay River & Area Métis Local #51 (or NWT) through investment strategies, financial expertise and support for Métis people in their economic initiatives and enterprise.

In carrying out our mandate and working to achieve our vision we will:
  1. Provide, first and foremost, sound fiscal management and investment management. This will ensure the HRDMC will be in a position to assist in the success of all other values.
  2. Always providing mentorship and support of the employment of Métis people. Assistance in the fashion, which includes monetary assistance, for the individual Métis Entrepreneur or Métis Student will encourage Métis Development.
  3. Maintain high ethical standards in all our business dealings in any community where we may operate.
  4. Foster a spirit of cooperation and partnership with all other development corporations or businesses.
